Day 18: Favorite Antagonist | They deserve our lov… Probably not this time

Hi guys and welcome to my place!

It’s day 18 of the 30-ish Day Video Game Challenge. First of all, here is the list for the 30-ish day video game challenge (you can click in the links to go to the posts of the previous days :D):

I know that in my 30 day anime challenge I said that the villains should receive our love, but let’s face it is harder to love an antagonist from a game than an anime, just because you feel in you skin (in this case your hands) all the trouble he gives to you! He is the one why you die so many times and you have to retry and also, as a main rpg player, I pass long hours with the story and the characters, so I start to live the game a lot more and the antagonist is not only confronting some game characters, he is confronting me and my friends! So, as always I will give you the one that instantly popped my head and then 3 honorable mentions (THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THE DESCRIPTION – and I’ll not talk about one of them because I don’t want to spoil the end of my top series coming out tomorrow xD):

Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid

Psycho_mantis

Psycho Mantis is a psychic member of FoxHound who can read other thoughts. He uses a gas mask to help prevent people’s thoughts from “forcing their way into his mind”. He was born during the cold war and his mother died giving him birth, making his father to resent him. He discovered his power while reading his father’s inner thoughts and with fear of being killed he burned his own house killing his father in the process. After that the only thing he wants he’s to kill everyone.

Now, I hate him because if you let him he kills Meryl while you are fighting him (making it Game Over), however this boss was one of the funniest to fight against. He reads your mind, so you will have to change your controller from first player to second player and the way around in the middle of the fight. Other thing he does is reading your memory card and if he finds any game from Konami (I think it only works with Konami) he will promptly say “Ah! I see you are enjoying playing *insert the game name here”. For a game on Playstation 1 where it was not normal for games to break the fourth wall, I really was amazed by this!

Now for the honorable mentions:

Nemesis from Resident Evil 3

Let’s face it, when I played Resident Evil 3 I was not old enough to be playing that game, so I got scared pretty much with everything (which I loved). This guy was always appearing in the game and every time he did I just got anxiety thinking “I’m not going to be able to beat him”. The first time he appears you can choose to run from him and enter the Police Station (which I did), but later in the game when you are passing a window he just smashes it and enters it giving you a really huge jump scare! I don’t really remember who he is or why does he exists, but that jump scare is on my mind even now! Damn I hate him because of that!

Yunalesca from Final Fantasy X

Now, Yunalesca is a character that you find later in the game. She is the one that provided the mean to temporarily “kill” Sin. After dying using Zaon as the fayth of her final Aeon, the unsent Yunalesca took residence in the Zanarkand Dome where she greets summoner at the end of their journey and explains them how to perform the Final Summoning – basically sacrificing the guardian with the strongest bond with his summoner. When confronted with Yuna rejecting this idea she tries to kill them all to save them from their “miser”, let’s face it! She is mad, period. I mean, yeah yeah all this crap about the sending and everything, but then she is an unsent and don’t want to go to the fade because she needs to teach other summoners to kill the person they love the most to “TEMPORARLY kill” Sin? I mean, if she really wanted to solve the problem, she had years and years to come up with a better solution…. More than that… Fighting her is a pain in the butt! Really! I remember that I really had huge problems until I understood the strategy!

Shuji Ikutsuki from Persona 3

Let’s face it, I was not expecting the chairman to be a bad guy… I mean, I did all the video tapes side/hidden quests and who could ever say that a guy that has so many lame jokes could be a bad guy? So, yeah for that he receives a medal, it is not everyone that is able to make me believe that he’s not the bad guy until he says it (For Persona 4 and 5 I was already suspecting the main antagonists before they said it for example). But, there is more! There is a tape recorded by Yukari’s father, which basically was everything she was looking for and he mixed things up so he sounded the bad guy there! I hate him with all my guts! Ah, and how could I forgot? You know the thing of getting all the twelve major shadows each full moon that supposedly is going to solve the problem? Well, that is just a vicious lie to manipulate all the main characters in helping summoning Nix, this huge shadow/god that will destroy the world… And of course, beating that will just consume all the protagonist’s life force and kill him which made me cry a little! And I blame that on Shuji!

  1. Well…you have included him. Nemesis was for me the greatest enemy that I have ever faced in a game. He was relentless, and I loved the fact that he just seemed to pop up every time out of nowhere. I can’t remember a single game where I faced a more terrifying enemy. He seriously gave me the creeps, but he was at the same time seriously awesome as well 😊
